I have almost been in the working world for 3 years now. Holy crap just saying that makes me realize that high school wasn’t just around the corner but is infact moving further into the past. Dam I am getting old.
Anyway, the point I want to make, is that people always ask me how I managed to grab a job at the age of 18 without being an intern. Simple my friends, I had a Real World CV. I could physically show employers in an interview what I had done. I didn’t need to sell myself in interviews or try crazy things to get an interview. For a junior position I had more than plenty real world examples I could use to show people what I can and can’t do.
This brings me to the point of my post today. A friend of mine came to me a couple years ago and asked me if I could help him setup a website for one of the ideas he had. I offered to help him and together we got Varsity View out of the gate. What do you guys think?
Ben started this bad boy all on his own with only two other writers I think. Now you can see the rather large list of writers they have for a student website where all writers write for free as far as I am aware.
Anyway, back to the point. This is a real world example that Ben can use on his CV. He has a Real World CV as he has actual experiences that he can call upon in future roles and that is SO vital. This immediately sets him apart and in my eyes, I would hire him over anyone else simply for the fact that the man has proven HE CAN DO SHIT. Hopefully one day when I am running my own setup, I will have the joy of employing some uber smart people, but more importantly, people like Ben that actually have stuff to back things up, and who GET SHIT DONE.
Ben is now stepping aside as he just has too much on his plate as he treks on with his studies, and things are being left in the more than capable hands of my man Glenn. I know Glenn is going to do an awesome job and will continue to inspire those writers and push VView higher and higher.
The point I am trying to make is that, this was a great opportunity for Ben to prove his worth in terms of getting some true experience and he has nailed it. I hope Glenn jumps onto this chance and in the future can walk into what ever meeting/interview he has and also commands the respect and bravado that these two gentleman clearly deserve. Big up chaps.
