Heightened Perspective

I was sent this in an email and I thought that as many people as possible need to read this as it hands over some valuable lessons in life, some that I have been fortunate enough to learn already, while others I would not have thought of until I read this. It is written by Andy Rooney, a man who has the gift of saying so much with so few words. Enjoy…

I’ve learned…. That the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person..

I’ve learned…. That when you’re in love, it shows.

I’ve learned…. That just one person saying to me, ‘You’ve made my day!’ makes my day.

I’ve learned…. That having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.

I’ve learned…. That being kind is more important than being right.

I’ve learned…. That you should never say no to a gift from a child.

I’ve learned …. That I can always pray for someone when I don’t have the strength to help him in some other way.

I’ve learned…. That no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with.

I’ve learned…. That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand.

I’ve learned….. That simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I was a child did wonders for me as an adult.

I’ve learned…. That life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.

I’ve learned….. That we should be glad God doesn’t give us everything we ask for.

Mercury Manic Monday

With it being a long weekend and exams finished, we decided to celebrate another birthday in style. We had heard about Monday nights at Mercury Lounge but had never actually gone there. It was time for a new adventure.

I raced through after hockey practice and my mouth dropped when I saw the queue just after 19h00. I thought i was never going to get in. Fortunately for me, I found a friend second from the front of the queue! Awesome! I quickly slipped in with him and was in. We headed in and had a couple of chilled drinks down stairs as we waited for them to open upstairs. We headed upstairs as the huge queue from outside started to flood in. Things took a while to get going, but once they did, things got hectic.

We soon found out why they call it Manic Mondays at Mercury. The place was absolutely packed, and it was actually difficult to move around, but we had our drinks and were determined to have an awesome time. We had a great time and danced for about 2 hours straight. Things got even better when we were given a free bottle of Jagermeister. None of us were stupid enough to have a sip first, but instead grabbed some dude next to us to be our guinea pig. After he had a few sips he gave it the all clear. Turns out it was fine. After we worked that out, the bottle didn’t last long. Between 7 of us that bottle disappeared before Usain Bolt could run 100m.

Unfortunately I had a hockey match early the next morning so I didn’t stay that late, but all in all, it was an awesome experience that we will certainly be doing again!

Did You Get Your Vanity Username?

So after signing up for my Facebook Vanity User name the other day, I started to ask around. I was too slow in getting my act together and therefore am stick with the user name that is not what I wanted, but I chose one and am now stuck with it. It doesn’t bother me though.

I started to ask around, and noticed that a lot of other people also forget to get their user names when they came out. Facebook did have 500 000 user names in the first 15 minutes, but that still leaves millions to fight over user names. Chatting to people on Gatorpeeps and Twitter, I noticed that not many people had luck in getting the user name that they wanted, and that it took a seriously quick finger, or very a very unique name to get hold of that desired user name.

Stii managed to grab his name rather easily as I would have imagined, but Dave it seems was stuck in the same boat as I am, and now have a number after his name. Justin was very clever and added .co.za after his name. This is actually his blog address as well, so that was a very clever move on his part.

One back move on Facebook’s part, is that they have not included any characters. I would have split my name using an underscore so that my name was original without any numbers as a suffix, but my plans were thwarted by Facebook. I don’t think that was such a smart move on their side.

If you still don’t have your own user name, click here to find out how.

Fantastic Friday

Friday signalled a friend of mine turning 18. The mark of becoming a man, and when a boy reaches that stage it is only right to celebrate it properly. That is what we definitely did!

It was a long day/night, but dam was it awesome. So we wrote our second Maths paper on Friday (I am still shaking from the terrible experience that was that paper), and with it being a long weekend and only one exam left, we organised that most of the guys would meet up at Forries for a beer and some lunch at about 13h00. I thought there would be like 15-20 of us, but that is not how my grade works. There must have been about 60 of us throughout the course of the afternoon! There were still more people slowly rolling in when we left just after 16h00. The walk back to my house, (the HQ for the day) was quite amusing and we lost Charl on the way. He just decided to go and visit a friend on the way back. After managing to make it home in one piece fairly happy ( ;) ) we chilled out for about an hour. Good music and chilled vibes are never a bad thing.

The next step of the day was to head through to a flat warming. I thought that was going to be chilled and quite and a nice build for the evening, but wow was I wrong! When we arrived the flat was packed, and the drinking had clearly started ages ago! We were more than fashionably late! The flat warming was awesome, and got into the mood for the real part of the evening!

My Facebook Username

So on the 13th of June Facebook launched their vanity usernames. This process is very similar to the one MySpace users, where a users profile can now have a unique address instead of the generic URL Facebook provides.

I was a bit of a slow coach in remembering the day and actually signing up so I havn’t gotten the user name that I would like, but I guess that is how life goes sometimes. You snooze, you lose.

If you want to go check out my new Facebook address, you can click here.

I think this is going to be a nice touch for all the social media junkies out there, but this can also be a bad move, with every tom, dick and harry now having their own address. My opinion is that the positives out way the negatives.

What do you guys think?
